Old Time String Band

The Old Time String Brigade is a new group that meets at Community Music Space to share songs from the age of music when recording was done on a wax cylinder or not at all. Prior to each session we will discuss a few tunes to play, post the chords and melodies on our website, and then arrange and play them down at the session.

Learn to Jam in the Improv ensemble!

Improvising music can feel daunting, but it’s something we all do every day—whether in conversation, cooking, or finding a new route home. Just as with these daily improvisations, music has its own set of tools to help you unlock creativity and join in the joy of group jamming.

In this ensemble, we’ll explore the building blocks of improvisation—rhythm, melody, repetition, and interaction.

You’ll learn to play spontaneously, work with others in a group setting, and gain insights into how improvisation has shaped American music. Through hands-on activities, listening exercises, and creative exploration, you'll develop confidence to express yourself musically.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Techniques to start improvising, even if it’s your first time

  • The role of rhythm, melody, and dynamics in creating engaging solos

  • Listening and responding in a group environment

  • The history and evolution of improvisation in jazz, blues, and other American music genres

This workshop is open to beginners and intermediate players of all instruments, including vocalists. While everyone is welcome, a basic ability to play an instrument (or sing) is recommended.

Join us for a fun and engaging journey into the art of improvisation and discover how to connect with others through music!
